Dear Friends,
Andrea here (Angie's sister and Office Manager Extraordinaire for Jonathan Field Horsemanship)
Hello from Course 3 at the James Creek Ranch! After more than 2 months away from home, we've got quite the variety of
things to update you on: from breakdowns and breakthroughs, blizzards
and sunshine, sick and healthy babies, standing ovations, campfires, cowboys and Canada Day. It's been a spring to remember!

Camps at the James Creek Ranch
We had a great Course 2 camp last
week and are halfway through Course 3 with great weather so far.
Jonathan and all the riders are having a blast! With bright and sunny
morning sessions outside at the lodge, knee high grass in the pastures (some of which has been cut and is being raked for hay as we speak), breakthroughs being made in the
pasture and 1 - 2 hour trail rides at the end of each day. The
improvements of the new pens, water and electric hook ups have been
great and the field by the lodge shows evidence of folks comin' to stay awhile. Also, because of one very persistent student wanting meals
provided during the camps, and a chain of events that followed, we have
found a wonderful lady that lives down the hill who is wowing and
feeding everyone home made dinners each evening at the lodge and we are
receiving rave reviews of her skill. Purpose Camp and Course 4 riders -
this option will be open to you also in September and I'll be emailing
you soon with details.
Speaking of Camps - we still have a
few openings for both the
Purpose and the Course 4 camps so if you're interested, get in touch
with me soon to guarantee your spot. info@jonathanfield.net

For a few days of the Course 2 Camp, Hugh McLennan was able to bring up a couple of his horses and his guitar. Hugh is the host of the popular, nationally syndicated radio program called Spirit of the West. Hugh was named 2008 American Cowboy of the Year by West Quest. What an honor! He rode with the riders during the days, entertained us all around the lodge and the campfire in the evenings and interviewed Jonathan for the radio program after riding in the camp for a couple of days. Thanks for coming out Hugh! It was a pleasure to have you here at the ranch!

Some of the Course 3 riders, knowing that they
would be up here on Canada Day, thought ahead and brought some
celebratory items to make sure everyone was feeling patriotic. Even the horses had tattoos. Thanks Ladies !

Day 2 of the Course 3 Camp introduced the use and safety of the 45' line. It wasn't long before Jonathan discovered that one of the horses in the current group had a sensitivity to the 45' line. After some play time with Jonathan and his owner and one day later, here is one of the breakthroughs I mentioned above:

Weston and Mason are sure glad to be here. There's lots of goings on with tractors, horses, bobcats, roping lessons and going for rides with mom!

Alberta, Saskatchewan & California - Road Trip 2010!
This year's clinic tour through Alberta and Saskatchewan began in Red Deer for the Mane Event April 23 - 25. Jonathan and crew left Abbotsford on April 20th and convoyed to Red Deer.
The Mane Event this year was, as always, a tonne of fun for us all. We get to reconnect with friends and meet so many great new people who are as Inspired by Horses as we are. The full stands and enthusiastic crowds, the Mane Event is a great weekend to celebrate the horse and educate the horseman.
We also launched the Liberty Series at the Mane Event (we literally had the DVD's delivered there from the duplicators and they arrived the day before we did). It was met with a lot of enthusiasm from the crowds. We're all really proud of this one and the two bonus DVD's, Triple Play and The Catch.
Thank you again Ron & Gail Barker, the owners of the Mane Event, for putting on another great show!
During the month of May Jonathan, Angie, the boys and Liz Duncan traveled all over Alberta giving a total of 5 full clinics, while I flew home right after the Mane Event to take care of my duties in the office.
Despite the unpredictable weather that is Alberta in May (think blizzards, freezing cold and high wind), all five clinics went as planned and nothing had to be canceled or postponed, although during that time Weston and Mason were both afflicted with various illnesses: colds and sinus infections. Angie and Jonathan hung in there and got them through it despite three visits to the medical clinic in one week.
From Alberta the convoy headed to Prairieland Park in Saskatoon for the first time teaching clinics in Saskatchewan and a Demo! I flew out to Saskatoon a couple of days before the demo and arrived to find a very wet Saskatchewan, with farmers hardly able to get crops in if at all, and news of Mason with a stomach flu that fortunately ran it's course in 24 hours. Then Angie caught it the next day.

The reception in Saskatoon was amazing. During the Demo evening we had more than 500 people in attendance! Poor Angie was able to rouse herself to came watch a half hour of the show.
Then Liz caught the flu.
Our wonderful host, Janice Ford, had her prayer group praying that Jonathan would not catch it so the clinics and demo could go on.
Then we had one whole day where no one else got sick (Jonathan, Weston and I all had our fingers crossed).
Then I caught it.
It ended there.
Thank you Janice Ford and husband Richard for hosting us. And thank you to Brenda Sapergia from Prairieland Park and all of the volunteers for your help while we were there! At one point we had about 12 people carrying stands of bleachers into the arena for the demonstration, and another 12 carrying them out and helping us clean up afterwards.
The day before we left Saskatoon for Moose Jaw one of the training wheels broke on Weston's bike. So Jonathan took the other one off. Here are a couple of photos of Weston's first time with no training wheels. It's amazing how fast they progress, because here at the ranch he is riding his bike around like crazy, at top speed and keeping up to his 8 and 10 year old cousins. Go Weston!
After Saskatoon, we packed up and headed for Moose Jaw for another clinic and a demo. Jonathan led the convoy with Angie and the boys in the motor home and all of our equipment, stock and booth set-up in the Heartland horse trailer behind them. Liz was driving the F450 with me and pulling the Bloomer horse trailer with Cam, Hal and Quincy inside. About 30 minutes out of Saskatoon, Liz felt a bang through the truck and looked out the passenger side mirror to see smoke coming from that side. Uh-oh! We've got a flat. Upon closer inspection, this flat tire is sitting at an awkward angle... We were able to contact Jonathan and he turned his rig around and came back to meet us and face what we all feared.
Broken axle. What now?
Thankfully, we had decided earlier in the year to NOT get a small utility trailer to haul around all of our stuff and to just use the other horse trailer for that purpose. We simply had to unload the Heartland, find room for everything that was jammed in there and get the horses moved over. Luckily the horses were fine and were probably just startled by the loud bang.
I'd like to take this opportunity to remind
everyone to make sure your bearings are maintained regularly and packed with grease. We had only
had the Bloomer for a few months and this was the first trip we'd taken
it on so did not think to do so with it being so new to us. We had the
Heartland done in the two days we were home before heading to
California. Aside from that, we've been really happy with the Bloomer trailer. After a long trip the horses come out of there rested and full of (almost too much) energy.
At least the weather was nice!
Move everything we did, and we still made it to Moose Jaw in time to set up for the Demo the next day.
Which also was fantastic. Although the attendance wasn't as high as Saskatoon, the footing in the arena was excellent and Jonathan and his horses were able to give a great performance!
After the demo Angie, myself, Liz and the boys headed home the next morning to Abbotsford . Jonathan stayed in Moose Jaw on his own to teach a clinic, with plans to fly straight to Sacramento from there. The girls had four days to get home, unpack, shoe horses and reload for California.
On the trip home, Liz drove the truck and the Bloomer (on one axle and empty), while Angie drove the motor home with me, Weston, Mason and 3 horses behind in the Heartland trailer. It was an uneventful trip to Golden the first night. On the second day, 20 minutes away from home a car pulled up beside the motor home and flashed a "FLAT TIRE" sign at us. We were just coming up to the Whatcom road exit on the freeway and we pulled in to find that one of the tires on the horse trailer had blown. We were so close! A call was made to Liz because she had the tools with her and by rolling the good tire up onto a block we got that tire changed before Jonathan's father even made it out to help!
Two days later, three horses shod and everything unpacked, washed, reorganized and repacked we were California bound.
Western States Horse Expo, Sacramento, California
 Where the weather was beautiful!
We arrived at CalExpo two days before the show started, leaving plenty of time for the horses to rest up and for Jonathan to get ready for his shows.
Once the trade show itself started, we were all a little humbled to hear "Make sure to catch Jonathan Field's presentations. A Canadian clinician taking North America by storm!" playing over and over again on the loudspeakers. How's that for a reception?
Over the course of the three days, Jonathan's presentations and shows were extremely well received with hundreds of spectators coming back to the booth after wards, glad he had returned this year. During the Saturday evening performance, Jonathan and Hal were beautifully connected and they received calls of "Encore!" from the crowds when it was over.
Jonathan was really honored to be on "The Horse Show" with Rick Lamb, on the television show "Speaking of Horses" with Wayne Williams, the Sacramento Morning News (where the reporter fell in love with Hal and wanted to steal him), plus several other interviews. It seemed like a quantum leap to help spread our message about horses.
We are very much looking forward to returning to California again in the future and maybe including some clinics in with the trip next time. |
